We offer you the crankshaft windage tray from 4 Stroke Motorsport for the Toyota GT86, Toyota GR86, and Subaru BRZ of the first and second generations. The tray is suitable for both the FA20 and FA24 boxer engines.
This high-quality product is manufactured in Germany and is especially aimed at vehicles that are regularly driven sportily or used on the race track.
What does a crankshaft windage tray do?
In a running engine, the returning engine oil is churned up by the rapidly rotating crankshaft and connecting rods. This can create a fine oil mist and partially foam the oil. At the same time, the crankshaft must move through the entrained oil-air mixture, which can lead to additional drag and friction losses.
The crankshaft windage tray creates an additional separation between the crank mechanism and the underlying oil system. It helps to guide returning oil more controllably towards the oil pan and to keep it as far away from the rotating crankshaft as possible.
As a result, the tray can:
- reduce oil turbulence in the engine
- counteract excessive mixing of oil and air
- calm the oil return towards the oil pan
- reduce drag losses at the crankshaft
- positively influence oil temperature and oil quality during high continuous load
- sensibly complement operational safety during sporty use
Especially at high RPMs, long periods of full throttle, and repeated race track exposure, the oil in the crankcase is subjected to severe stress. A better-controlled oil system can therefore make a valuable contribution to a more robust overall concept.
Oil pressure issues with FA20 and FA24
For both the FA20 and FA24, a reliable oil supply during high lateral acceleration plays an important role. Especially with the FA24 in the GR86 and BRZ II, temporary oil pressure drops in fast corners have been repeatedly documented during track driving.
The crankshaft windage tray can improve oil routing and the handling of returning oil. However, it is not equivalent to a classic oil pan baffle and cannot alone prevent an oil pressure drop caused by oil sloshing sideways or a temporarily exposed pickup.
For heavily used track tools, the crankshaft windage tray should therefore be considered as part of a holistic oil supply concept. Depending on the vehicle and intended use, an oil pan baffle, an optimized oil pan, controlled oil temperature, and oil pressure monitoring may also be useful.
Advantages:
- Suitable for Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ I with FA20
- Suitable for Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ II with FA24
- Quality product from Germany
- Additional shielding of the crankshaft from returning engine oil
- Reduces oil turbulence in the crankcase
- Can counteract foaming and aeration of the engine oil
- Supports a more controlled oil return
- Can reduce drag losses at the crankshaft
- Useful addition for sportily driven vehicles and track tools
Installation notes:
Installation is significantly more complex than with a conventional oil pan baffle, as the crankshaft windage tray is mounted further inside the engine. For this, not only the oil pan, but also other components in the lower engine area must be professionally dismantled and then resealed.
Due to the installation position, the necessary sealing work, and the immediate proximity to the crank mechanism, we recommend installation exclusively by a specialist workshop experienced with FA20 and FA24 engines.
